Practical Guidelines for Cultural Safety
Respect Sorry Business Protocols
• Honour community grieving customs by avoiding use of deceased persons’ names or images, as guided by Elders.
• Use culturally respectful language around death and mourning.
• Allow space and sensitivity during “sorry business” to support emotional wellbeing
Use Appropriate Naming and Addressing Practices
• Follow community protocols by not using personal or “skin” names without permission.
• Address clients with respectful kinship terms such as “Aunty,” “Uncle,” or other appropriate titles.
• Adapt communication to respect gender-specific roles and cultural protocols.
Maintain Gender Sensitivity
• Recognise gender-specific communication needs and cultural norms.
• Facilitate same-gender interpreting when requested, especially for sensitive matters.
• Ensure safe, comfortable environments for all genders, children, and Elders.
Honour Elders and Community Leadership
• Show patience and respect by allowing Elders to guide cultural context during interactions.
• Acknowledge Elders’ authority and wisdom.
• Avoid interrupting or contradicting Elders publicly.
Maintain Confidentiality and Privacy
• Treat all information shared as confidential according to cultural protocols and legal standards.
• Do not disclose information beyond agreed contexts.
• Respect community boundaries on knowledge sharing.
Be Mindful of Communication Styles
• Use clear, respectful language suited to clients’ cultural contexts.
• Recognise the importance of pauses, silences, and non-verbal communication.
• Practice patience, allowing clients to express themselves fully.
Protect Vulnerable Clients
• Provide culturally safe interpreting tailored to children, Elders, and trauma-affected clients.
• Use age-appropriate, culturally respectful explanations.
• Collaborate with support workers or cultural advisors when necessary.
